JoAnn Manson

JoAnn E. Manson, MD, MPH, DrPH, MACP, is Professor of Medicine and the Michael and Lee Bell Professor of Women’s Health at Harvard Medical School, Professor in the Department of Epidemiology, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and Chief of the Division of Preventive Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH). Dr. Manson is a physician epidemiologist, endocrinologist, and Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI of several research studies, including the Women’s Health Initiative Clinical Center In Boston, the cardiovascular component of the Nurses’ Health Study, the VITamin D and OmegA-3 TriaL (VITAL); the COSMOS trial, and the VItamin D for COVID-19 (VIVID) trial. Her primary research interests include randomized clinical prevention trials of nutritional and lifestyle factors related to heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, the role of endogenous and exogenous estrogens as determinants of chronic disease, life course-related risk factors for CVD in women, and biomarker predictors of CVD. Dr. Manson has received numerous honors, including the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Population Research Prize, AHA’s Distinguished Scientist Award, AHA’s Research Achievement Award, election to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies (National Academy of Medicine), membership in the Association of American Physicians, fellowship in AAAS, Bernadine Healy Award for Visionary Leadership in Women’s Health, Alma Dea Morani Renaissance Women Award, James D. Bruce Memorial Award from the American College of Physicians (ACP), and election to mastership in ACP. Dr. Manson has published more than 1,200 peer-reviewed articles in the medical literature, is the author or editor of several books and textbooks, is past Editor-in-Chief of Contemporary Clinical Trials, and is past president of the North American Menopause Society. Howard Sesso

Dr. Howard D. Sesso is an Associate Epidemiologist at the Division of Preventive Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and Associate Professor of Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He designs and conducts randomized clinical trials and epidemiologic studies, focusing on dietary supplements, nutrition, and lifestyle factors to prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD), hypertension, and other aging-related outcomes. Dr. Sesso is the Associate Director of the Division of Preventive Medicine and Director of Nutrition and Supplement Research at the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine. Dr. Sesso helps lead the Physicians’ Health Study, consisting of two trials testing aspirin, beta-carotene, vitamin E, vitamin C, and a multivitamin on aging-related outcomes in 29,071 men. Dr. Sesso is also examining vitamin D and fish oil supplements on blood pressure, hypertension, and other outcomes in the VITamin D and OmegA-3 TriaL (VITAL). Finally, Dr. Sesso is Co-Principal Investigator of the COcoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study (COSMOS), a recently completed trial testing cocoa extract and multivitamin supplements in the prevention of CVD and cancer in 21,442 older women and men. He has published more than 350 papers, teaches courses on clinical trials and epidemiology, and enjoys mentoring students and junior faculty.

Barbara Shukitt-Hale

Dr. Barbara Shukitt-Hale is a USDA Staff Scientist in the Laboratory of Neuroscience and Aging, USDA-ARS, Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA) at Tufts University in Boston, MA. She received her Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from Boston University and has been involved in research for 40 years. Dr. Shukitt-Hale investigates age-related motor and cognitive performance changes due to oxidative stress and inflammation, in conjunction with changes in cellular function and signal transduction, and the possible amelioration of these effects with proper nutrition. Notably, she has shown that polyphenolic compounds have beneficial effects on the brain, including enhanced signaling, autophagy, and neurogenesis and that fruit and vegetables, such as strawberries, blueberries, and walnuts, can prevent and even reverse age-related changes in brain performance. Recently, Dr. Shukitt-Hale has focused on translating these results to humans through the use of clinical trials. She continues to research the mechanisms behind the positive effects of foods. She has published more than 248 manuscripts and selected papers and serves on the Editorial Board of numerous scientific journals.

Cesar G. Fraga

Dr. Fraga is Superior Researcher at the National Council of Scientific Research (CONICET), Argentina, and Emeritus Full Professor of Physical Chemistry at the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA). He is Professor Associated to the Agricultural Experiment Station-Department of Nutrition at the University of California, Davis, USA. Dr. Fraga received his degree in Chemistry (1980) and his doctoral degree (1985) from the UBA. His research is based on plant bioactives, especially polyphenols as potential health protectors in terms of both, nutrition and pharmacology. A major focus of this research is on deciphering the biochemical pathways, mainly those involving redox homeostasis that affect cardiovascular, renal, and intestinal physiology. Active researcher in the field this congress since 1983, he led the organization of two ICPHs, one in Davis, California in 2005, and the other in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2013.

I´m a postdoctoral fellow from Complutense University of Madrid. My research is focus on the evaluation of the effect of bioactive compounds present in diet on health outcomes through randomized clinical trials, examining magnesium and blood pressure. My overarching goal is to assess the correlation between bioactive compounds present in diet (food and/food supplements) and health status, all in the framework of magnesium, blood pressure, and hypertension risk.

Junji Terao

Junji Terao, Ph.D. is an Emeritus Professor of Tokushima University. He received his Ph.D. in Kyoto University and worked in Research Institute for Food Science Kyoto University, Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, and National Food Research Institute MAFF Japan. In 1997, he joined Department of Nutrition, Tokushima University School of Medicine. After the retirement in 2016, he worked at Konan Women’s University for 6 years. His research interests are bioavailability and physiological function of dietary antioxidants and pathophysiological function of lipid peroxidation products. He published more than 240 peer-reviewed scientific papers.

Patricia Oteiza

Dr. Oteiza is a Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Environmental Toxicology and a Professor at the Department of Nutrition at the University of California, Davis. Her research is centered on the relevance of bioactives and trace elements on human health. In terms of bioactives, her investigations are focused on the beneficial actions of flavonoids in diet-associated obesity and chronic diseases. In particular, she studies the biological actions of flavonoids at the gastrointestinal tract and how they can contribute to mitigate the development/progression of obesity comorbidities. Dr. Oteiza completed undergraduate and doctoral degrees in Biochemistry at the University of Buenos Aires, and did her postdoctoral training at the University of California, Davis. She was Assistant and Associate Professor at the University of Buenos Aires, and Scientist of the National Research Council (CONICET) between 1990 and 2003, when she joined the faculty of the University of California, Davis. Dr. Oteiza is Editor of Archives of Biochemistry and a member of the Editorial Boards of Biofactors, Free Radical Biology and Medicine, Redox Biology, and Molecular Aspects of Medicine, and of the Advisory Board of Food and Function. She co-organized ICPH 2013 in Argentina, and international conferences on redox biology (Oxygen Club of California).

Aedin Cassidy

Aedín Cassidy joined the Institute for Global Food Security at Queen’s University, Belfast in 2019 as Chair in Nutrition & Preventive Medicine and Director for Interdisciplinary Research. She is currently the Co-Director of a £30M Co-Centre on Sustainable Food Systems. Her research focuses on understanding the impact of plant bioactives on health, with a major focus on dietary flavonoids. She has led the way in determining the relative importance of different flavonoids for health, leading clinical trials, combined with large population-based prospective data, bioavailability and mechanistic studies. She was awarded the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award and has served on various committees and expert panels including REF2014 and REF2021. She is a Fellow of the American Heart Association and a visiting scientist at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health.

Ana Rodriguez-Mateos

Dr Rodriguez-Mateos is a Reader (Associate Professor) at the Department of Nutritional Sciences of King’s College London. Her research aims to investigate the health benefits of plant foods and phytochemicals, with a strong focus on understanding the bioavailability, metabolism and cardiovascular health benefits of dietary (poly)phenols. More recent interests include the investigation of the role of the gut microbiome on the health benefits of phytochemicals, and the development of biomarkers of food intake using metabolomic approaches. Her expertise includes development and validation of analytical methods for the analysis of foods and biological samples using LC/GC-MS and performance of randomized controlled trials with cardiovascular outcomes. She is a Registered Nutritionist, Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy. She received the Nutrition Society Silver Medal Award in 2023 for scientific excellence in the field of Nutrition.

Andrew Neilson

Dr. Neilson received his BS in Food Science from Brigham Young University in 2005 and his PhD in Food Science from Purdue University in 2009. He completed a postdoc in diet and colon cancer prevention at the University of Michigan Medical School from 2009-11. Dr. Neilson was a faculty member at Virginia Tech from 2011-18 and moved to NC State in 2019. Dr. Neilson’s research focuses on interactions between dietary bioactives and the gut microbiome and how such interactions affect human health. Recent interest focuses on how polyphenols can inhibit production of deleterious gut microbial metabolites such as trimethylamine N-oxide. He is an associate editor for the journal Food & Function.

Antonio Gonzalez-Sarrias

Antonio González-Sarrías is a biologist and work as Tenured Scientist since 2018 at CEBAS-CSIC (Murcia, Spain) and a member of the Food and Health Laboratory. His scientific career has been focused on the evaluation of biological activities, mainly anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective and neuroprotective properties of different dietary polyphenols and their in vivo metabolites, mainly in preclinical (cell and animal models) studies, thus evaluating whether polyphenols are responsible, at least in part, that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is correlated with a lower incidence of chronic diseases. He is author/co-author of more than 100 scientific research publications, reviews and book chapters and his H-index is 49. Remarkably, the scientific impact of this research led to be highly-cited researcher in 2020-2021 (Clarivate, Web of Science).

Charlotte Mills

Charlotte is a Lecture at University of Reading. Her research employs a multidisciplinary approach, combining clinical and basic/analytical science to investigate the impact of plant bioactives and other nutrients on cardiometabolic health and the mechanisms underpinning these effects. She specifically interested in methods for maximising beneficial health effects e.g. through food processing and synergy. Christine Morand

Dr Christine Morand studied Biochemistry and Cellular Biology and she received her PhD at the Blaise Pascal University in Clermont-Ferrand, France, in 1991. She is full research director at INRAe, the French National institute for research on agriculture, food and environment. She is working in the INRAe-Human Nutrition Unit of Clermont-Ferrand, where she leads a research group focusing on plant food bioactives and vascular health. She has a long lasting experience in the field of Nutrition & Health, focusing her research on dietary polyphenols, their bioavailability, metabolism and their role of in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Over the last years she has expressed a special interest for a better understanding of the interindividual variability in response to the consumption of plant food bioactives (coordination of the European scientific network COST-POSITIVe). Currently, she is the Chief Editor of the journal Food and Function (Royal Society of Chemistry, Cambridge, UK).

Claudine Manach

Claudine Manach is a tenured scientist at the INRAE-Université Clermont-Auvergne Human Nutrition Unit in Clermont-Ferrand, France, since 2000. She obtained her PhD on the bioavailability of flavonoids in 1998. After >12 years of research on the bioavailability of (poly)phenols, she invested early in nutritional metabolomics. She created PhytoHub, an online database on the metabolites of food phytochemicals to facilitate their annotation in metabolomics profiles. She is conducting collaborative projects, such as the JPI HDHL FoodPhyt and PlantIntake projects, to better assess individual exposure to (poly)phenols and other phytochemicals using metabolomics in the context of precision nutrition. One of her objectives is to identify and validate biomarkers of plant food intake to use them in combination with improved dietary questionnaires. She recently developed a FFQ focused on polyphenols. Since her investment in the COST Action POSITIVe (2014-2018), she has a major interest in investigating the inter-individual variation in (poly)phenol absorption, metabolism and exposure, depending on dietary habits and metabolic capacity, especially in relation with the gut microbiota

Daniele del Rio

Prof. Daniele Del Rio is the Vice-Rector for Research and Technology Transfer at the University of Parma and a Full Professor of Human Nutrition. He is also the Chair of the Board of Directors of the ONFOODS Foundation. His work has been devoted to understanding the human and microbial metabolism of dietary polyphenols and how it could affect their health effects.

Dragan Milenkovic

Dr Dragan Milenkovic is Full Faculty Researcher at the Department of Nutrition, University of California Davis. He received his master’s degree in genetics and molecular modelling from University of Paris, France, and his PhD from University of Versailles, France, in molecular genetics. His research focus on examining the effects of diets and nutrients, particularly polyphenols, on vascular and neurovascular function, risk factors, such as inflammation, gut permeability and gut microbiome, and associated impact on cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurodegenerative diseases. His lab also aims to identify variability in responsiveness to intake of these nutrients and factors involved, particularly gender, age, and genetic polymorphism. Moreover, his research aims to decipher in depth molecular mechanisms of action of diets and nutrients underlying the observed health properties using integrated multiomic approaches, including genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, epigenetics, and metagenomics, coupled with bioinformatics and machine learning.

Eric Rimm

Eric is Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition and the Director of the Program in Cardiovascular Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Professor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School. For over three decades he has conducted extensive research on the health effects of diet and lifestyle in relation to obesity and chronic disease, publishing more than 900 peer-reviewed publications during his 30 years on the faculty at Harvard. He continues to oversee an extensive research program focused on the health effects of alcohol, micronutrients, antioxidants, and fatty acids, as well as plasma, microbiome, and genetic markers of heart disease. He is also the Co-Director of the Channing Laboratory’s biospecimen repository, overseeing the management of over 3 million aliquots from repeated samples, collected on over 100,000 participants in 4 large Harvard-based cohort studies. This includes now as Director of the new collection of 20,000 stool and oral microbiome samples in the MICRO-N (Microbiome among Nurses Study) in the Nurses Health Study II. He is also an expert in the research and translation of work in nutrition - evidenced by membership on several influential, national committees. He previously served on the 2010 USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans Advisory Committee and was Chair of the Subcommittee for Alcohol. His longstanding work on diet, obesity and chronic disease and recent work on the human microbiome have earned him several research awards, including the Nutrition Innovation Award for research on whole grains from the American Society of Nutrition.

Francisco Tomás Barberán

Studied Pharmacy at Valencia University (1975-1980) and PhD in 1984. Research Professor of CSIC (Murcia, Spain). He has been visiting scientist in Reading University (UK), Laussane University (Switzerland), Lyon University (France), and UCDavis (USA). His research aims to the study of the role of food polyphenols in human health, their interaction with gut microbiota and their potential in personalized nutrition with a metabolomics approach. He has transferred results of research to industry (six patents of which three have been licensed and derived products are actually in the market). Author of over 400 publications in scientific journals within the fields of phytochemistry, and food science and nutrition (High Impact, H-index = 109 in Web of Science Core).

Jacob Lessard-Lord

Dr. Jacob Lessard-Lord is a postdoctoral fellow at the Faculty of Pharmacy of Laval University. He received his BSc in Chemistry and his PhD in Plant Sciences at Laval University. His research focus on the bidirectional interaction between flavan-3-ols and gut microbiota and the inter-individual variability associated with this interaction. His expertise includes development of new methods to quantify microbial (poly)phenolic metabolites using enzymatic hydrolysis and new technologies for ultrafast analysis.

Javier Ottaviani

Dr. Ottaviani’s interests are in developing and translating innovations in diet and nutrition for health maintenance and optimization in individuals and at the population level. Dr. Ottaviani’s current research is focused on understanding the nutritional relevance of flavanols, procyanidins and other bioactive compounds’ impact on disease prevention and overall health. Over the last years, Dr. Ottaviani has successfully translated advances in flavanol analytics and bioavailability into the development of novel nutritional biomarkers for their application in large-scale observational and interventional studies as well as for the design and execution of safety and efficacy clinical studies. Dr. Ottaviani has also engaged in the study of wearables for the development of personalized dietary recommendations. Dr. Ottaviani is a graduate of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Currently, Dr. Ottaviani holds a position as the Director of the Core Laboratory and a joined faculty position at the Department of Nutrition, University of California Davis.

Kaeko Murota

Kaeko Murota received a Ph.D degree in Agriculture from Kyoto University in 2001. She started polyphenol research in a laboratory of professor Junji Terao at Tokushima University in 1999. Her research interest is the bioavailability of dietary flavonoids and their interaction with dietary lipids. She has been a professor at Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences, Shimane University since 2018. In 2019, she received JSBBA Research Award for Woman Scientists by Japan Society for Bioscience, Biotechnology and Agrochemistry, for her recent research on "Structural characterization of dietary flavonoids involved in their bioavailability and identification of their in vivo metabolites."

Letizia Bresciani

Dr Letizia Bresciani is an Assistant Professor in Human Nutrition at the University of Parma, Italy. Her research focuses on identification and characterization of phytochemicals, mainly (poly)phenols, in plant-based foods, and their human metabolism, bioavailability and bioactivity in vivo and in vitro, with a particular interest in inter-individual variability related to microbial catabolite production, in order to identify possible metabolic phenotypes (metabotypes). She acquired a large experience in liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, setting up standardized analytical methods to identify and quantify native plant phytochemicals, and phytochemical and (poly)phenol human metabolites and microbial catabolites. Recently, she has started to work with mass spectrometry imaging to investigate in situ distribution of bioactive compounds in targeted organs and tissues. She has also experience in phytochemical dietary intake assessment, developing a new questionnaire to evaluate the daily intake of (poly)phenols, considering the in-season differences.

Monica Galleano

Dr. Monica Galleano is full professor of Physical Chemistry at School of Pharmacy and Biochemistry, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. She has been involved in research on Polyphenols and Health for 20 years. Studies conducted in her laboratory were related with redox metabolism and the effects of flavonoids on chronic diseases in experimental models of hypertension and type II diabetes. Pedro Mena

Pedro Mena is an Associate Professor in human nutrition. His line of research is related to the bioavailability and bioactivity of plant bioactives, with a particular focus on (poly)phenolic compounds and interindividual variability, where his team is developing realistic, translatable initiatives based on stratified and precision nutrition. Among other achievements, he has been awarded an ERC grant on the topic (PREDICT-CARE) and leads the precision nutrition WP of the largest Italian consortium on food and nutrition ever (ONFOODS).

Raul Zamora-Ros

Dr. Raul Zamora-Ros is a principal investigator and co-Head of the Unit of Nutrition and Cancer at the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL). He qualified in both Nutrition and Food Science and also obtained a master on Statistics and Epidemiology. He earned his Doctorate from the University of Barcelona in 2008. He did his PostDoc at the IDIBELL, International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the University of Cambridge, before joining his current position in 2016. His topic of expertise in polyphenol epidemiology. He is particularly interested in whether polyphenols and polyphenol-rich foods are causally associated with the development of chronic diseases, especially cancer. He is co-author of more than 150 peer-review articles (>6,000 citations, h-index: 46), above 10 book chapters in his area, and has participated in more than 75 international conferences.
